June 2018 – A Busy Term 4 for SOS

As ever the Tackling Sectarianism resources are delivered in two ways. Directly by SOS staff and more sustainably by teaching staff as the topics have become integrated into the curriculum.

Term 4 of this academic year has seen unusually high demand for SOS staffed workshops, delivering the Primary Schools Workshop Resource. This is due to an increased number of schools reading The Divided City in this term. Traditionally Terms 2 and 3 are the most popular but we can only assume that the increase in demand this term has been due to an uplift in schools studying the novel and using the associated resources for the Divided City, as published on the Education Scotland National Improvement Hub and Glasgow Online.

As a result of CPD sessions delivered by the SOS Development Officer across neighbouring Local Authorities and lectures about the Tackling Sectarianism agenda and related resources at various courses at Glasgow University there has also been an uplift in demand and resultant supply for Primary School and Secondary School resources. Divided City and Scarfed for Life resources in particular have been in demand from schools in East Renfrewshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, South Ayrshire, North Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway.

Secondary School direct delivery from SOS staff has centred on the S2/3 Scarfed for Life Resources and the S5/6 Employment, Social Media & Sectarianism resource. Schools from several local authorities have taken advantage of these workshops and copies of free resources. Evaluations have been very positive and are available on demand.

One strong area of progress has been the willingness of student teachers to teach the SOS resources while on placement as part of their development. This progress has also led to the growth of the Tackling Sectarianism “Footprint” as these students are placed all over the country.
