The purpose of Tollcross YMCA is to promote citizenship and develop community spirit by encouraging young people to consider their enviornment and engage in intergenerational activities to bridge the gap between young and old. The general activities of Tollcross YMCA are to provide recreational facilities within a safe environment that promotes educational and social activities for the youth of Tollcross. Such as team building, music, drama and sport programmes, issue-based work such as employment programmes, alcohol and drug awareness/ diversion initiatives and street work to tackle gang violence.

Statement:  “The issue of sectarianism is a deep routed under lying issue that impacts far beyond football rivalry or religion in Glasgow.  It is a cultural and generational issue that is handed down from father to son that shapes a younger generation to adopt archaic idea and beliefs that need more awareness raised so that the nature of sectarianism is not passed as harmless songs sang on at football grounds and then passed off as harmless banter.

Darran Gillan, Youth and Community Development Manager, Tollcross YMCA

Definition of Sectarianism: Young people who participated on the “More Than Just A Song” project delivered by Tollcross YMCA now say that Sectarianism to them is an unjust dislike to another established group that believes, lives or supports a cause different to your own, to the point that you take some kind of negative action to hurt them or disqualify what they say or are about publicly or privately.
