In 2015, The Spark will celebrate 50 years of providing relationship support to individuals, couples and families across Scotland.  We are a well-established and highly respected charity delivering a range of relationship support, education and counselling services.  As a national charity, the organisation is committed to ensuring that all Scottish residents have access to relationship support, regardless of whether they live in a remote and rural location, in a village, town or city. Our services include: The Relationship Helpline; Relationship Counselling; Children & Young People Services; Training for Professionals.

Statement:

The Spark’s Children & Young People Services team delivers a Positive Community Relationships programme to help young parents and prospective young parents raise their awareness of the impact of sectarian behaviour on their families and communities. Our group work includes training in and discussions on: Relationships and Families; Values; Communication; Anger and Conflict and Change.  The programme challenges generational belief systems in a non-threatening way and equips young people with the confidence to deal with sectarian behaviour in a positive manner. It also increases their relationship skills, helping them to be positive role models to their children.

Definition of Sectarianism:

“Sectarianism in Scotland is a complex of perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, actions and structures, at personal and communal levels, which originate in religious difference and can involve a negative mixing of religion with politics, sporting allegiance and national identifications. It arises from a distorted expression of identity and belonging. It is expressed in destructive patterns of relating which segregate, exclude, discriminate against or are violent towards a specified religious other with significant personal and social consequences.”
