Looking Forward Not Back is an action research project funded by the Scottish Government examining youth works effectiveness in tackling intra-Christian sectarianism. Six projects have been chosen from YouthLink Scotland’s membership organisations to deliver a youth work project and participate in the action research for 9 months (up until December 2014).

Research Gap

To date there has been limited evidence on the effectiveness of youth work specifically in tackling intra-Christian sectarianism across Scotland and even less on youth led or youth engaged approaches. Due to this research gap, we will work in partnership with the young people and youth practitioners from each of the six projects, to co-design and co-produce the action research.

This is a warts and all piece of research where we are asking the projects to share their learning both positive and negative, which will then inform the sector about the effectiveness of youth work in tackling intra-Christian sectarianism.

Choosing the Projects

In the application to become one of the six projects, applicants were asked to demonstrate that their project was youth work in nature and adhering to the three essential features of youth work:

  • Young people choose to participate
  • The work must build from where young people are
  • It recognises the young person and the youth worker as partners in a learning process

They needed to show that their project had emerged from a community need and interest to tackle intra-Christian sectarianism and they would engage with the community through their project. Lastly, they were asked to demonstrate how the lessons from their project would be fed back into the local community and within the organisations practice to tackling sectarianism. It was also important that they were not currently funded by the Scottish Government to tackle sectarianism, to ensure that new innovative practice is being developed and tested through the projects.
