CSAG began in July 2013 and is a project under the umbrella of the West of Scotland Regional Equality Council (WSREC). WSREC is an equalities organisation that has existed for over 40 years, promoting equality and diversity throughout the region and aiming both to reduce discrimination and promote positive attitudes to diversity. CSAG is funded by the Voluntary Action Fund and aims to challenge sectarian beliefs and behaviour by the provision of 3 outcomes relating to ‘sectarianism in the context of family and community life’:

  • The development and delivery of community education
  • The delivery of research work on this topic
  • The development and delivery of a community theatre production looking at ‘sectarianism in a Scottish family’

Statement:

Our period of project delivery is from July 2013-July 2015 and in this time we will publish the research report and deliver the theatre production which will run in Winter 2014.Our education service will provide free resources and training for any youth practitioners or community organisations looking to deliver work challenging sectarianism. Interested parties can contact CSAG to book this training or request a copy of the resource pack. Additionally we will be actively engaged in delivering workshops to schools and youth groups and are interested to hear from any community organisation that would like to host a free workshop.

Definition of Sectarianism:

Sectarianism in Scotland is a complex of perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, actions and structures, at personal and communal levels, which originate in religious difference and can involve a negative mixing of religion with politics, sporting allegiance and national identifications. It arises from a distorted expression of identity and belonging. It is expressed in destructive patterns of relating which segregate, exclude, discriminate against or are violent towards a specified religious other with significant personal and social consequences.’ Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism in Scotland, 2013
